Alex Ashley from Starr's Mill High School is a two time Georgia High School AAAA State Champion, and is also a two time Georgia Freestyle State Champion. In 2013 Alex also took the Gold Medal at the USA Wrestling Southeast Regionals and came one round away from placing in the Junior Division at the biggest and most prestigious high school age tournament in the nation, the USA Wrestling’s Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo ND. Alex was one of our very first Club Team members. I remember when Alex and his father, Jim walked into Wrestling U during our Open House in April 2011. My first thoughts of Alex were that he appeared to have all the physical attributes, but who are we going to find to wrestle with this big guy”? Being freshmen when Alex joined our club team April 2011, he started out like most kids, taking his lumps and loses during his 1st year. However he persevered and continued to work hard and wrestle in every tournament he could. I would say Alex had his breakout tournament as a sophomore in May 2012, at the USA Wrestling Southeastern Regionals in Freestyle. Alex placed 4th just missing the Bronze Medal, but beat several good wrestlers at this tournament. Going 3-2, he defeated a top competitor from Iowa, along with a Florida and a Louisiana High School State Placer. Every since that tournament Alex has been on a role. He went on to win the 2012 Freestyle State Title in June, and wrestled for Team Georgia at the USAW National Duals and at the USAW National Championships in Fargo ND. At the National Duals and Fargo Alex gained valuable experience and even caught the attention of some college coaches. In his Junior year, Alex won the 2013 GHSA AAAAA State Title, Freestyle State Title and the USAW Southeastern Regionals Title. Alex also competed again with Team Georgia at the National Duals and in Fargo. In his second trip to Fargo, Alex went 5-2, and came one round away from placing and becoming All American. It was at Fargo that Alex really caught the attention of some Division 1 College Coaches. Alex signed a scholarship to wrestle at The Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland.
